How to Get Through the Afternoon Slump

Three o’clock does not have to be a cliff. A few small changes made it a gentle slope.

We have all met the three o’clock cliff. You have worked all morning, eaten a perfectly reasonable lunch and found yourself, at about 2.45, unable to read a sentence twice.

The usual remedies are coffee and biscuits. They work briefly and then charge interest. What worked better for us was a short list of small changes:

  • Walk after lunch, even for ten minutes. Daylight resets the body clock and gets the blood moving.
  • Eat protein at lunch. A sandwich with something in it, not a bowl of pasta, keeps the energy steadier.
  • Drink water early. Mild dehydration feels remarkably like tiredness.
  • Do the hard thing before lunch. Save the admin for the afternoon, when your brain is most forgiving.

If it still arrives, accept it. Stand up, stretch, open a window and make a cup of tea. Ten minutes of attention to the problem is usually enough to get you through the next hour.
