The Designers to Watch Next Year

Every year we ask the people who buy, style and sell clothes which small labels they are watching. This year six names came up again and again, and none of them has a flagship shop.

  • A knitwear studio in Porto that spins, dyes and knits in the same building, and makes the softest, most wearable cardigans on our list.
  • A tailoring label run from a spare room in Leeds, cutting jackets that fit like they were made for you, which they sometimes were.
  • A shoemaker in Naples reviving a thirty-year-old pattern and finishing every pair by hand.
  • A bag maker in Copenhagen whose designs are all straight lines and very good leather.
  • A shirt specialist in Lisbon making cotton so crisp it holds a collar by itself.
  • A jeweller in Edinburgh making rings from recycled silver, one at a time.

What they share is not a look but an attitude: small production runs, honest materials and a refusal to hurry.
