Not every exhibition deserves a trip. These three do.

## A retrospective in the north

A major painter’s first full retrospective in thirty years, arranged not chronologically but by colour. You begin in a room of greys and end in one of orange, and the effect is thrilling. Allow a whole morning and book ahead.

## A sculpture garden by the sea

A small park, a path and a dozen works that are meant to be walked around, touched and sat on. The best are the quietest. It is also a very good place to have lunch.

## A show of tiny paintings

A single room of paintings no larger than a postcard, hung at eye level and lit like jewels. You lean in. You lose track of time. You find that you have become a person who stands in front of a painting the size of a hand for five minutes, which is the whole point.

All three are open for another few weeks, and all three are easier to reach than you think.
