- Description: How do you keep a friend when you stop living down the road? Slowly, deliberately and with a lot of voice notes.

There is a particular grief in watching a close friend move away. The practical friendship ends first: the spontaneous coffees, the sofa visits, the unplanned Tuesday. What survives, if it survives, has to be built on purpose.

What we have found helps:

- **Voice notes, not texts.** A thirty-second message with your tone in it is worth ten typed ones.
- **A standing call.** Once a month, same day, same time, in the diary like any other appointment.
- **Visits that are about the person.** Not the city, not the sightseeing. Sit in their kitchen.
- **Letting the silences be.** A gap of three weeks is not a verdict. Pick up the thread without apology.

Friendship at a distance is less convenient and, oddly, often deeper. You say the things that matter, because you cannot waste the little time you have on the things that do not.
