There is jewellery that you wear and jewellery that wears you in. The second kind is the good kind. It scratches a little, softens at the edges and takes on a warmth that only comes from years against the skin.

Look for solid metals, not plated ones. Solid gold and silver will wear, but they will wear *well*, developing a patina that the plating never can. Choose simple shapes, because they are easier to repair and easier to live with. And pay attention to the weight: a ring that feels substantial will probably last.

For stones, think hard ones, such as sapphire and diamond, if you want something that will stay unblemished, and softer ones such as opal or pearl if you do not mind a bit of care. Both are beautiful; they just ask different things of you.

A final tip: do not clean your jewellery too often. A soft cloth is usually enough, and the slow glow of a well-worn piece is part of the point.
